Restaurants in Agios Nikolaos: Where to Eat

Most of the eating in Agios Nikolaos happens within a short walk of the water. The harbour and Lake Voulismeni sit in the middle of town, ringed with tables, and the choice runs from a plate of grilled fish by the quay to a long, slow dinner of creative Greek cooking. The coast road north toward Elounda adds a few more. What you pick usually comes down to four things: the view you want, the kind of food you are after, the occasion, and, in summer, whether you thought to book. We run Piato, on Akti Koundourou, and we have watched visitors work through that decision for twenty years. Here is how we would help someone arriving for the first time think it through.

Where are the best restaurants in Agios Nikolaos?

The dining splits into three pockets, all easy to reach on foot or with a short drive: the harbour and Lake Voulismeni, the old-town lanes behind them, and the coast road toward Elounda. Where you head depends on the night you want.

The harbour and Lake Voulismeni

This is where the view tables and most of the well-known kitchens are, along Akti Koundourou. It is the spot for the postcard: the water, the sunset, and a slower dinner. Piato sits on the second floor of an 1886 building here, with the harbour and the lake below the balcony.

The old town

Two streets back from the water, the lanes lean casual: mezze, family tavernas, a quick plate and a carafe of wine. Come here when you want something unfussy and local, and you can usually walk in without booking.

The coast road to Elounda

Ten to fifteen minutes north by car, Elounda is where you go for a bigger night out. It is an easy drive for dinner and back, and worth it when the occasion calls for it.

What food is Agios Nikolaos known for?

Cretan and creative Greek cooking set the tone, next to fresh seafood, Mediterranean plates, and a wine scene that has grown fast over the last decade. Cretan food leans on what the island grows: seasonal produce, wild greens, cheese and honey, good olive oil, and wine made from Greek grapes. Meals often begin as mezze, several small plates shared across the table, rather than one course after another.

Our own kitchen cooks certified creative Greek cuisine, which means familiar island dishes rebuilt around what arrives that morning. The bread comes from a bakery we run in-house, and the oil on the table is ELIXIRIUM, the extra-virgin olive oil we press ourselves. That is one table in a real scene, not the only one worth your evening.

Best restaurants for a special dinner

For an anniversary, a proposal, or a proper wine night, Agios Nikolaos has a handful of refined creative-Greek and Mediterranean kitchens with lake or sea views. A special dinner here usually means a table booked for sunset, a menu built around Cretan produce, and a wine list worth reading slowly.

At Piato that wine list lives in the Secret Cellar, an underground room dug during the Second World War, now holding an all-Greek selection that Wine Spectator has recognised with an award. Ask the floor to pair a glass to your food, or read the story of the Secret Cellar first. The balcony faces west, so a table booked for sunset comes with the light going down over the water.

Where can you eat with a view of Lake Voulismeni?

Lake Voulismeni sits in the centre of Agios Nikolaos, and tables ring it on almost every side, so a view of the water is easy to find. The moment worth timing is sunset, when the light drops behind the hills and the harbour lamps come on. A table booked ahead for that hour is the difference between the view and the second row.

Piato’s balcony looks over both the lake and the harbour from the second floor. If you want to see what the kitchen is doing that season before you decide, read our seasonal menu.

Do you need to book a table in Agios Nikolaos?

In peak season, July through September, the waterfront and view tables fill for sunset, so booking ahead is the safe move, ideally a day or two in advance. Outside those months you can usually walk in, though a weekend evening still fills up. The one rule that holds all season: if the view matters to you, book it.

When you know your night, book a table at Piato and pick your hour for the sunset.
